Wildflower-lupine, golddle ground-wild turkey bounding across the field. A lone quail scurried across our path and a deer slipped into the shadows. Did I mention the lack of traffic? Back in Kelseyville, we stopped for lunch lounging at a window front table in a state of post-ride euphoria; I devoured a delicious sandwich and plotted my next trip to Clear Lake.”~ Sharon Sutliffe, San Luis Obispo Tribune, May 2003 “Lake County is a 'Roadies' Paradise' with it's profusion of riding opportunities.” ~Cycle California Magazine, September 2002 Click here for more information about “Lake County Bicycling and Bike Paths”.

ROCKHOUNDING Drive time from 1 minute to 30 minutes from the Edgewater Resort! In Lake County, amateurs as well as avid collectors can discover a semi-precious stone found nowhere else in the WORLD! The Lake County “diamond” or beta quartz crystals have a rating of 7.5 - 8 on the Moh hardness scale compared to real diamonds rated at 10. They have been used commercially and industrially and are capable of cutting glass. In great demand as semi-precious gems, they can be set uncut for a rough, natural look or cut and faceted to give them a fire which compares to the brilliance of real diamonds. Our stones are pieces of silica which are released from basalt deposits during rains and lay scattered over the hillsides concentrated through the region southeast of Mt. Konocti. They are easily spotted after a rain which washes off the red soil in which they are found. The geologic history of the Clear Lake basin, with eons of seismic activity, also accounts for the abundance of obsidian or “bottle rock”, found throughout the area; it was used extensively for fishing spear points by the Native Americans.
